What is TED?

TED (short for Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a U.S. private non-profit foundation[1] that is best known for its conferences, now held in Europe and Asia as well as the U.S., devoted to what it calls "ideas worth spreading".[2] Its lectures or TED Talks, widely disseminated on theInternet, are subject to an eighteen minute time limit. [Wikipedia]

What is Salon?

salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase their knowledge of the participants through conversation. These gatherings often consciously followed Horace'sdefinition of the aims of poetry, "either to please or to educate" ("aut delectare aut prodesse est"). Salons, commonly associated with French literary and philosophical movements of the 17th century and 18th centuries, were carried on until quite recently, in urban settings, among like-minded people. [Wikipedia]

What is TEDx?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBayArea. At our TEDxBayArea event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

What happens when TEDx meets Salon?

Find out! On August 10 inspirational group of authors, technologists, artists will meet at the informal gathering in Mountain View.

Featured Guest:

John Hagel

John Hagel

John Hagel III, is a co-founder of the Deloitte Center for Edge Innovation (with John Seely Brown and Lang Davison).  His work focuses on the intersection of business strategy and IT and has been recognized by the World Economic Forum, Accenture (Top 100 Business Gurus), Business Week (one of the 25 most influential people in electronic business), and he has twice been the recipient of the McKinsey Award for the best article published in the Harvard Business Review.

Co-author of Net Gain, Net Worth, Out of the Box, and The Only Sustainable Edge, we will have the pleasure of hearing about a new book, The Power of Pull -- How Small Moves, Smartly Made, Can Set Big Things in Motion (Hagel, Seely Brown, & Davison, 2010, Basic Books).

About The Power of Pull (from the authors’ Harvard Business Review Blog):

The power of pull puts each of us, individually and together, in a position to collaborate in a complete re-imagination of our biggest private-and public-sector institutions, one that may eventually remake society as a whole. As customers, we have more choices, and more information with which to make those choices, than ever before. As talented employees we have greater power too than before, since we create the lion's share of today's corporate profitability. As each of us votes with our feet and allies ourselves with new generations of institutions, we'll abandon the old ones, leaving them to drift into obsolescence and setting in motion a reshaping of broad arenas of economic and civic life.

Other reviews for The Power of Pull:

William Jefferson Clinton, 42nd President of the United States of America
The Power of Pull examines the “how question”—how can we effectively address our most pressing challenges in a rapidly changing and increasingly interdependent world? In The Power of Pull, John Hagel, John Seely Brown, and Lang Davison highlight fascinating new ways in which passionate thinking, creative solutions, and committed action can—and will—make it possible for us to seize opportunities and remain in step with change.”

Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Google
“Hagel, Brown, and Davison have given us a provocative and insightful look at the power of today's knowledge flow. If you want to meet the challenges of working and living in the 21st century, this book should be your guide.”

John Doerr, Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers venture capital
"The Power of Pull is a powerful new meme for navigating and networking in the 21st century.”

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives
The Power of Pull will do for our 21st-century information-age institutional leadership what Peter Drucker’s The Concept of the Corporation did for industrial-era management. This book begins to create a body of learnable principles that will revolutionize our ability to access and work with knowledge flows.”

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
